An interactive activity where students use video clips of displacement reactions together with animations to investigate the Reactivity Series for metals.

During the activity video clips of displacement reactions are shown alongside an animation of a Sumo wrestling contest. If displacement occurs the defeated Sumo wrestler is pushed out of the ring. Some clips show there is no reaction, in which case neither wrestler is pushed out of the ring.

Students accumulate points by betting correctly on the results of the displacement reactions. They can revise an incorrect bet after watching the video clip, although their points score will be lower.

After each match pupils rearrange the metals on-screen. When they are ready they submit their order of reactivity. They lose points if they submit an incorrect reactivity series, and must return to the game to check their conclusions. They may re-submit their table as many times as necessary. At the end they get a certificate print-out to show their points scored and the final correct table.

Print out the two pupil's sheets. Pupils will need these for the activity.

Students are shown an on screen demonstration of the interactive activity for the reaction between copper sulphate solution and iron metal. The demonstration takes them through each step of the game:

  • watching the video clip
  • placing a bet
  • watching the video clip plus animation
  • the eventual result of this match

Pupils then choose a reaction to bet on and run the activity themselves. After each reaction pupils record the results on their first sheet. They can be extended to writing a word equation OR a symbol equation on the second sheet.

After watching all the displacement reactions, pupils submit their final reactivity series for checking.
