Citizenship consists of a bank of
resource sheets designed to be very
flexible, for use with pupils at appropriate
places in your curriculum. They can
help you to develop lessons for use
as a contribution to citizenship education
in the science classroom or during
dedicated citizenship lessons.

Citizenship becomes a foundation
subject for KS3 and KS4 in England
from August 2002. QCA's detailed SoW
for teaching Citizenship through Science
at KS3 are available on-line at:
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes
Since citizenship lessons may be
taught by teachers who are not science
specialists, the pupil resources are
accompanied by extensive supporting
materials for teachers.
We have suggested some teaching approaches
that may be relatively unfamiliar.
These include:
- Consequence-mapping exercises
- Identifying goals, rights and
responsibilities
- Cartoons for stimulating discussion
- Use of drama
So that these resources can be most
easily incorporated into your existing
schemes of work, we have chosen three
contexts that are covered extensively
in science. These main activities
are on this website.
In this section we have also included
some more general background briefing
documents on teaching strategies,
including web research, role play
and group discussion.
Remember, if you are a science teacher,
you are not responsible for teaching
the whole of the Citizenship curriculum!
Your pupils will be coming across
many of the same ideas elsewhere in
their studies, and they are likely
to be familiar with some of the teaching
approaches recommended in these resources.
It will make your life easier if you
co-ordinate your work with that of
colleagues in other disciplines within
the school.

Note: Most documents in this resource
are presented as PDF files. If you
wish to edit them, you may find it
simplest to convert them to Word format.
Highlight the desired text and use
copy and paste to transfer into a
blank Word document.
