Biotechnology money saving kits and INSET courses – provided courtesy of Science Year supporters!

Available from the National Centre for Biotechnology Education (NCBE), UK secondary schools have the chance to purchase a protein electrophoresis kit for £20 + VAT (normal price £100). The kit comprises of 8 sets of electrophoresis equipment, together with teacher and pupil materials as featured in previous biotechnology sections. To take advantage of this excellent offer, visit the NCBE website for further details: www.ncbe.reading.ac.uk

As part of Science Year, the Institute of Biology and Bio-Rad are collaborating with a number of science centres and science museums to offer teachers a one-day course focusing on various aspects of gene technology.

The course will take place at various venues during the summer term, 2002, and is aimed at supporting teaching and updating knowledge. The course will include:

  • A practical session performing a bacterial transformation that you can see, and which your students will also be able to do.
  • A talk about ethics relating to applications of gene technology and/or an update on cutting edge research from a scientist working in the field of gene technology.
  • A chance to explore displays in the science centre or museum venue that are more broadly relevant to post-16 biology specifications. Staff from the education department will give advice about using the venue with students.

The course fee is a remarkable £55, which includes lunch and refreshments during the day, and valuable resource materials to take away.
