This resource includes a number of
activities to support immunisation
teaching in science and the QCA Citizenship
unit What's in the public interest?
We have chosen the context of immunisation
as pupils will have been immunised
at several times in their lives, as
part of national health programmes,
and perhaps for travel, and because
immunisation is a frequent topic of
controversy - think about the debate
over the MMR vaccine, and the question
of vaccination of cattle against foot
and mouth disease.
However, immunisation is purely an
example. Many other issues, such as
food safety, organ transplants or
forensic science could provide an
alternative focus, depending on your
pupils' interests and experiences.
The QCA Citizenship unit What's
in the public interest? includes
an annotated list of relevant websites:
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes
General guidance for citizenship
teaching is provided in the Citizenship
section of this website, and on the
QCA website at:
http://www.qca.org.uk/ca/subjects/citizenship/

Very detailed Teacher Notes are provided
for all of the activities. We suggest
that you view these and then select
those which you feel are most suitable
for your pupils.
In addition to the paper-based classroom
resource files, an ICT model is also
available to demonstrate the spread
of disease under different conditions.
This is included in the Modelling
section of this website, together with
supporting teacher and pupil resources.
