Zoos is a PowerPoint template
for pupils to produce their own presentation
on the habitat, adaptations and feeding
relationships of a particular animal.
The activity improves pupils' ability
to select relevant information for
a presentation, develops their ICT
skills and increases their knowledge
of the relevant science concepts.
Many pupils have strong views about
the role of zoos in our society. This
Can we; should we? issue may be
explored in the science classroom
with the Assemblies
activity on this website.

Aimed at pupils aged 11-13, Zoos
is an interesting alternative to producing
posters or leaflets. The high quality
appearance of the work appeals to
pupils with poor literacy or presentation
skills. Pupils are encouraged to think
carefully about their audience, the
relevance of the information they
select and where further information
can be found.
The resource is presented as:
- One PowerPoint template containing
images of ten animals from Chester
Zoo.
- Ten background information documents
with a range of information on each
animal.
- Pupil sheets to help them design
the presentation and use PowerPoint.

A PowerPoint presentation consists
of a series of slides that can include
images and/or text. More advanced
presentations may also include sounds
and movie clips.
Some pupils may already be familiar
with PowerPoint, and those who are
not can learn the basics very quickly.
The presentation template has deliberately
been kept very simple to facilitate
this, and the pupil sheets cover the
basics of PowerPoint use.
Chester Zoo has very kindly collaborated
with us to produce this resource.
They have provided information about,
and images of, ten animals in their
care. These animals have been selected
to demonstrate a range of adaptations,
and in some cases, because they are
an endangered species, to show the
depth of conservation work with which
the zoo is involved. In particular,
our thanks must go to Sara Ruks for
all her time and effort in making
this information available.
The PowerPoint template should be
saved to the individual workstation
before pupils begin. Pupils are provided
with a background resource document
from which to select information.
They insert this selected text into
their presentation, and choose relevant
images, which are provided on the
template, to illustrate the information.
Pupils may also insert information
that they have researched from other
sources.
