Citizenship becomes a foundation subject for KS3 and KS4 in England from August 2002. The previous CD ROM, Can we; should we?, contained a bank of resources to help you develop lessons for use as a contribution to citizenship education in the science classroom or during dedicated citizenship lessons. This material has been developed by Deborah Peskett, Teacher of RE & PSHE, Oldfield School, Bath (formerly Associate Tutor, Citizenship PGCE, University of Bristol) looking at the links between science, politics and business through the context of ozone depletion.

The material comprises of an introductory PowerPoint following the ozone depletion debate through scientific discoveries, political decisions and business responses. This presentation acts as a stimulus for research and presentation work by pupils.

QCA's detailed SoW for teaching Citizenship through Science at KS3 together with supporting resources are available at:

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes2/citizenship/?view=Units

Since citizenship lessons may be taught by teachers who are not science specialists, the pupil resources are accompanied by extensive supporting materials for teachers.

Remember, if you are a science teacher, you are not responsible for teaching the whole of the Citizenship curriculum! Your pupils will be coming across many of the same ideas elsewhere in their studies, and they are likely to be familiar with some of the teaching approaches recommended in these resources. It will make your life easier if you co-ordinate your work with that of colleagues in other disciplines within the school.

The previous CD ROM, Can we; should we?, included a series of resources to support the QCA Citizenship Units. An additional resource has since been produced to add to those produced for Organic Farming. Food Safety includes a number of key scientific and science ideas related to food safety, and information about a number of agencies working in this field.
