In collaboration with the Manchester
United Study Support Centre, the Association
for Science Education (ASE) has developed
a simple interactive resource including
background information on nutrition,
balanced diets and healthy eating.
Pupils research different nutrients
and their sources, before making changes
to a player's favourite menu to try
and improve its 'Nutrigauge' score.
They are given feedback on their choices
and can send details of their favourite
healthy meals to the Study Support
Centre website, where menus from other
schools will be displayed. Teacher
and pupil sheets are available from
within the resource and below.

This activity is suited to younger
pupils. The resource can be used simply
as a source of information on different
nutrients, but is more effective if
pupils use their knowledge to select
different choices for the player.
A worksheet is provided to help them
record their background information.
After they have amended the player's
menu, they can print out the feedback
messages as a record of their work.
To send their own menus pupils will
need to have access to the Internet,
and as the whole resource will be
on-line at www.sycd.co.uk/good-to-eat/,
they could do this as homework.
This resource has been donated to
the wide range of projects on The
British Council's Montageplus
website www.montageplus.co.uk.
The Montageplus programme is
a diverse collection of Internet-based
curriculum projects, professional
development activities and educational
exchange ideas.
