2.1 What Do They Know?
Video clips of children working and on-screen text focus
on evidence of children's development in a series of
process skills. Criteria are given for assessing the
skills, and the next steps in learning are identified
with suggestions for helping the children take those
steps. Managing the learning process is discussed and
there are suggestions for practical activities to help
the teacher try out the approaches covered.
2.2 Passport
A template for a series of bridging projects to make
the transition from primary to secondary school successful,
as pupils collect visas to mark achievement in scientific
skills. Investigations started in the primary school
are completed in the secondary school. This could be
used as a stand alone activity in primary classes.
2.3 Parents in Primary Science
Guidance and advice to help involve parents in school,
including activities pupils may take home to do.
2.4 Adapting and Amending Schemes of Work
Materials to help teachers adapt the Qualifications
and Curriculum Authority (QCA) Scheme of Work for Key
Stages 1 and 2 to suit their own schools and to encourage
creativity in science teaching.
2.5 Other Resources
A 'Good Resource Guide' for primary and secondary schools.
A number of resources are reviewed by practising teachers
according to usefulness in supporting the curriculum;
how much time each takes to use, whether it will enhance
planned lessons without a lot of modification and whether
it provides enough information for its use.
2.6 Websearch
Reviews of websites suitable for use by primary children
in their own research or by teachers to illustrate teaching
points. Also includes information on museums and other
resources and advice on how to make a web page.
