is organised for three age groups 5-7 years, 7-9
years and 10-11 years.

A step by step guide to the complete investigation
including:
- Reference to National Curriculum programmes of study.
- Background information for teachers.
- Hints for carrying out the investigation.
- Full guidance for each year group, including key
questions, assessment and further activities.
You will need to print out a copy of the notes for
ease of use. You will need the following equipment:
- For the age 5-7 investigation - a large lump of
ice, stiff paper, a tall, straight-sided container
and some Centicubes, or similar
- For the age 7-9 investigation - a large lump of
ice, tape measures, measuring cylinders, weighing
scales
- For the age 10-11 investigation - beakers, hand
hot water, crushed ice and thermometers or temperature
sensors.
