Solids, liquids and gases provides information
and ideas for teaching about materials and their
properties to pupils aged 7-11 year.
|
 |

Information is provided through cartoons, downloadable
worksheets and ideas for experiments under the following
topic headings:
- Solids
- Liquids
- Changing solids into liquids and back again
- Dissolving and not dissolving
- Gases
- Solids, liquids and gases
- Solid to liquid to gas
- Changing states of water
- More about dissolving
- Reversible and non-reversible changes
- Glossary of science terms
Topics follow the QCA scheme of work for Key Stage
2, but curriculum links are also provided for the Welsh,
Scottish and Northern Ireland curricula.

Cartoon animations are used to introduce each topic
and may be used to revise previous topics before progressing
to a new aspect of the subject. Practical activities
to support pupil learning are presented as downloadable
worksheets (see Resource Files below), with notes for
teachers or as ideas for experiments and investigations.
We suggest that you browse the cartoon animations,
view the descriptions of the activity worksheets, and
select those which you wish to use with your pupils.
(It is assumed that pupils will already have had the
opportunity to handle objects made from different types
of solid materials and have grouped them according to
their properties. Simple ideas about solids are revised
in the first animation and in the activities linked
to the animation.)
There are sixteen Solids, Liquids and Gases animations,
each taking approximately one minute to run. As one
animation finishes the next one begins. When all animations
have played you can replay any of the animations. If
during a lesson you only wish to view a specific topic,
start the animation sequence in advance of the lesson
so that they are ready for you to select a topic individually.
The experiments have been adapted from those used in
workshops for pupils aged 7-11 years by The Making Place
(www.the-making-place.co.uk)
or are taken from That's Chemistry by Jan Rees. That's
Chemistry was produced as part of the Royal Society
of Chemistry's programme of support for education and
a copy was sent free of charge to every primary school
in the UK in 2001 with support from ABPI. Further information
about this resource, together with details of how to
order further copies, may be found at www.chemsoc.org/learnnet/thats-chemistry.htm
Guidance is provided for activities that require a
particular awareness of safe working practices. Teachers
should use their knowledge of their pupils' capabilities
to select appropriate practical work for them to do.

Please note that this resource is currently unavailable
on-line. However, the resource is available on the ASE/Science
Year Primary CD ROM. Please contact ASE Booksales on
01707 283001 to obtain a copy.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is the Learned
Society for chemistry and the Professional Body
for chemists in the UK, with over 46,000 members
worldwide. The RSC is a major publisher and provider
of chemical information, supports the teaching
of chemistry at all levels, organises hundreds
of chemical meetings a year and is a leader in
communicating science to the public. The RSC provides
LearnNet, a new network designed for the use of
teachers and students of chemistry at all levels.
The network aims to provide access to products
and information relevant to the study of chemistry.
This site has been classified by experts in the
teaching of chemistry to ensure that the best
interests of the users have been accommodated
at all times. Find them at http://www.chemsoc.org/networks/learnnet/index.htm

The Making Place (3 Exmoor Street, W10 6BE) is
a purpose-built science and technology centre
for children, teachers and families. It provides
workshops linked to the National Curriculum for
primary & junior schools and Holiday Activities
for families. Visitors take part in hands-on experiments,
then design and make products based on their findings
to take away at the end of the session. The topics
covered include the body, materials, forces, electricity,
sound, light, design and ICT. A registered Charity,
The Making Place charges a small fee per child
to cover the cost of materials. For more information
