From August 2002 Citizenship becomes a foundation subject for KS3 and KS4. Citizenship will help pupils to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels. It will encourage them to become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens.

The National Curriculum states that at KS3 pupils should be taught:

1b about the diversity of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities in the United Kingdom and the need for mutual respect and understanding.

Citizenship is a curriculum area that your school may choose to deliver through subject areas or as an individual subject. For 'Who am I ? ' the Race activity can be used to promote respect for different ethnic identities and to develop pupils' ability to reflect on issues and participate in discussion. The resources can be used within the science classroom or during dedicated Citizenship lessons.

Race can also contribute to the delivery of PSHE in the science classroom. Through PSHE at KS3 pupils learn about themselves as growing and changing individuals and as members of their communities acquiring maturity, independence and power. They become more self-aware, and are capable of more sophisticated moral reasoning. They take more responsibility for themselves and become more aware of the views, needs and rights of people of all ages.

Help on the teaching of controversial issues can be found in the citizenship guidance for for KS3 and 4 at
